Origins of the Maori and Pacific Design.
The Polynesian peoples of the Pacific ocean trace their origins back to the heavens of Polynesia; Hawaiki nui, Hawaiki roa, Hawaiki pamamao

Maori have retained a oral history of the genealogy that brought the physical world into being. That genealogy traces the beginning from Te Kore (the great nothings and the unlimited potential), Te Po (the darkness of many degrees) and Te Ao Marama (the world of light and enlightenment) into which Ranginui (the sky father of the huge abundant vibrating light source) and Papatuanuku (the earth mother, the solid land mass for ever changing and moving) were created. The genealogy shows Tane, one of the off spring of Ranginui and Papatuanuku, separated his parents and then clothed them both.   Ranginui with the milky way, stars, clouds etc and Papatuanuku with the trees, grass, stones and pebbles, water and mud etc. Tane then went in search of the female element of creation to bring into the physical world as a partner and mate. Tane procreated with all of the off spring in the heavens and on the earth and produced more off spring but never found the female essence required to bring into physical being. Papatuanuku advised Tane where to look and what to do to meet his quest and after many adventures achieved the creation of the female element.

From the deeds of Tane the Maori race of Aotearoa New Zealand and the myriad peoples of the vast Pacific ocean have proof that all peoples are genealogically related to all other beings in the heavens and the earth.   It is from this close genealogical connection and the intimate living with in all of the natural elements that Maori and Pacific design has its genesis.

The designs developed by Tutina Pasene for her exquisite garments come from the traditional designs of her people. Tutina and sons combine their knowledge of the traditional with their experience of the contemporary to produce designs that are unique to the Pacific nation.
